I should really have called this series 'seasscapes'! This one is from another trip to Holy Island and is shot from the same shore as the picture looking towards bamburgh castle, except that this shot is looking due east, following the line of the shore towards Lindesfarne Castle. I was lucky in that the clouds, as well as the shore, had conspired to make a focal point of the castle.
I've spent most of last month working on images to put on my (currently under construction) website. Most of them I won't be posting here but landscape photography is the area I'm most interested in getting into so I figured, why not put them out there (or on here)!
I am 80-90% satisfied with these images; I like to photograph wild places and dramtic landscapes but I'm not sure if my processing seems a little... amature. So please be as harsh as you can regarding post processing as well as composition, lighting, subject matter etc: I'm looking to improve!
I welcome all constructive comments, compliments and criticisms. I am here to learn. the fastest way for me to learn is for you to be really unforgiving and articulate in your criticism =D)
If you don't have time to comment don't forget to give a star rating as you pass through!

another great 'sea-land scape'. I must visit this place again, you've got a great shot here. I've only been once and the tide was in! (http://itsallaroundyou.aminus3.com/image/2007-08-14.html).

@Rhys: Yeah, its a great little place to go shooting, you can basically see it all in a day. I like your shot - typically dark and brooding. Your style I mean, not the island =D)
heres a tip for you, use a tripod always, use the thirds rule, centered horizons don't work, but still a wonderfull seascape, cheers.

@pedro alexandre: Hi Pedro, thanks for the comment. You are, of course, right about the tripod (although I'm not sure why you chose this image to mention it, this one as it seems nice and sharp to me - except for the castle, which is a result of selectiely enlarging it in Photoshop causing a resolution mismatch). I need to get a decent tripod though, any recommendations?
As for the centered horizon, that was a result of indeciveness - do I sell the big sky or the textured foreground? Following yours and Chris' advice I have recropped it to make more of the sky and move the castle over to the left thrid of the frame. It does look much better like this so thankyou again for your input =D)
Nice shot.

@Betty: Thanks.
blue blue everywhere ....looking great

@Rajesh Dhankhar: Yes that blue sky was awesome =D) Thanks Rajesh.
Great image, composition, tones, subject - just beautiful!

@MadScientist: Thanks, can't get a better comliment than that! =D)
A wonderful looking coastline - so much to shoot there I imagine. I really like parts of this shot but on the whole think that it may be a little more powerful with some different placement of the elements (like moving the horizon to the bottom and highlighting that blue sky). Although I knew about rule of thirds I have recently really started paying attention to it and think my images have improved.

@Chris: Hi Chris, thanks for the comment. I usually stay away from centered horizons (although I have 3 or 4 in this collection as they sometimes help create a mood) and you are right, in this case a reframing with the horizon on the lower third and the castle at the left intersection would make for a much better image. Needless to say, I have already recropped it =D) Thanks!
very nice landscape . . .

@Saeed: Thank you.
A splendid image with exceptional detail, beautiful shot.

@Observing: Some great superlatives there =D) Good use of 'splendid' and 'exceptional' in a sentence ha ha! 'scuse me, I know its not good form to enjoy compliments this much lol
Great landscape, depth of field is great.

@Alun Lambert: Thank you =D)
Lovely, nice landscape!

@S.A.Lee: Thank you! =D)
Fantastic shot, and rules in photography are really just guidelines. Like your wok.

@Graham Russon: Cheers Grazy =D)
The three horizontals bands of color (sky, water, land) are also interesting.
13 Apr 2008 3:40pm
@Ana Lúcia: Thanks, I like playing with layers of colour like that, although this one is very blue - glad you noticed =D)
Great ! I like the colour of the background sky
13 Apr 2008 4:22pm
@pLusOne: Thanks +1, the sky was awesome that day.
Well, I’ve come in after the recrop but, yes, that old 1/3 rule holds fairly firm, I find. You seem to be covering quite an angle for a 27mm (40 equiv) in this one : works very well.
13 Apr 2008 7:06pm
@Ronnie 2¢: Hi Ronnie, I think you've done your math the wrong way round. I think I was shooting at 18mm but the 1.5x crop factor of the Fuji means it was actually 27mm - still pretty wide. In actual fact the castle looked too small in the shot so I enlarged it quite a bit in Photoshop (which has caused a resolution mis match and the castle looks too blurry to my eye).
The sky really grabbed me on this one then I took in the rest... beautiful.
13 Apr 2008 7:19pm
@Earnest: Thanks, thats kinda how I wanted the shot to work +D) Its a bit of a cheat when you have to scroll down the screen to see the whole pic though...
very nice shot with the sky being the highlight for me...
14 Apr 2008 2:38am
@DarkElf: Thanks - its good to see the picture is working as I intended =D)
Whoa that's stunning, leave us some room to criticize ;)
14 Apr 2008 6:21am
@Lorraine: Ah Lorraine, thank you but I can see a few things that can be improved so I won't let that go to my head =D)
great work

@yiannis krikis: Thanks Yannis!
Beautiful landscape like all the others. I agree with the composition comments here but I would have done it the other way around on this shot. The sky has a nice color but isn't particularly dramatic or interesting. So I would have left only 1/3 of the sky in this shot... The rocks and the castle just seem more interesting to me.
15 Apr 2008 9:59am
@Peter: Hmmm.. interesting, I shall do another recrop and see which one I like best. Initially it was the sky that caused me to take the shot but I do think that the texture of the rock gioves the eye more to chew on... thanks for the comment and for making me think =D)
lovely bit of seascape (as you call it) ... and the blue really stands out against the overall tone of the picture ... :) ...
(even though i read a lot about the rules of composition, sometimes i really don't feel like following any rules and simply enjoy what i do with my photography) ... :) ...

@dilip: Thanks dillip =D)
I don't tend to follow rules religiously unless I am unsure of what I am doing and too afraid to get creative. But this image does look stronger cropped with the rule of thirds in mind!
tripods, i bought one cheap and then came to regret it, manfrottos 190 is very good and yes its kind of expensive but when you use it youll see why, of course rules are ment to be broken, when i take my shots i'm always thinking about the framing, i planned it very carefull. so you have a great sky with a nice foreground should you sacrafice somethig? yes, if the picture gains from it, in the end it just our personal taste, i prefer to see less foreground more castle and sky because they look more apeeling to me, again my pernonal taste
20 Apr 2008 10:39am
@pedro alexandre: Thanks Pedro, I've actually just invested in a benobo 2 with a manfrotto head. I bought it online, I wasn't prepared for how big it would be! Now I have an issue, when I am travelling to shoot landscapes I can either choose to carry my tripod or my tent on the motorbike but not both! The sacrafices we make lol!
My taste leans more towars the foreground in most cases but in this instance I took your advice and cropped some of it out to strengthen the image.
