This shot represents another attempt on my part to step away from my usual, over-processed, type of workflow. I spotted this one day whilst riding home down the A1, so I pulled up and took a few quick snaps.
Once again, I did not have my tripod with me (I am going to make one of those string tripods for sure) so I couldn't take a seperate shot to expose for the foreground. this is probably a good thing or it may well have turned into another of my 'high dynamic range, high contrast, hich colour saturation' images and I am much more pleased with this, rather subdued result.
I've spent most of last month working on images to put on my (currently under construction) website. Most of them I won't be posting here but landscape photography is the area I'm most interested in getting into so I figured, why not put them out there (or on here)!
I am 80-90% satisfied with these images; I like to photograph wild places and dramtic landscapes but I'm not sure if my processing seems a little... amature. So please be as harsh as you can regarding post processing as well as composition, lighting, subject matter etc: I'm looking to improve!
I welcome all constructive comments, compliments and criticisms. I am here to learn. the fastest way for me to learn is for you to be really unforgiving and articulate in your criticism =D)
If you don't have time to comment don't forget to give a star rating as you pass through!

@Rhys: Its surprisingly full of nice views but I'm usually going too fast to take pictures =D)
I like the softness and light in this shot.

@MaryB: Thanks Mary =D)
I love the light here, which really adds interest to the scene. I might have actually titled the camera down enough that I'd have not taken in the sun. Or, as a suggestion: try cropping it just below the sun. To me, the sun isn't the important part, its the way that the greens of the landscape soak up and intersect with that light. So a very low horizon with the dominant element as the lawn and trees in the distance might improve the shot. Just a suggestion.

@GJC: You know, I think you're right, even just scrolling so that the top of the image isn't visible improves it. Thanks!
very calmative & soft shot ! ... nice capture , thanks.

@Helma: Thank you =D)
Ok, GJC stole my thunder... was going to suggest a more panaramic style crop... However, the light is really sublime... lovely soft hues. The fence leads the eye very nicely to the very distant trees. Like it very much, Dan!!

@amy: Well I have decided I will crop it so you can share in the thunder =D). Thanks for the compliments!
I like the framing and the subject very much

@yiannis krikis: Thanks YK =D)
I like the composition a lot - although I normally don't like "horizon in the middle" pictures, this one is not problematic because the foreground has some nice diagonal lines in it and the sun is in a good position (not centered). Wonderful colors and lighting - very peaceful image (sometimes simple is better!).

@Chris: Thanks, I usually go for dramatic so this is new for me but the centered horizon line is an issue. I'm going to crop it to a more pamoramic style, which should sort that.
As has already been mentioned about the sun, it has caused a few flares. I understand your subdued color approach, personally I prefer your other images with more contrast. That's only my view, but the landscape is terrific.

@Observing: Thanks! I'm glad you prefer my default style =D)
i really like the soft contrast that you have here, i think it brings out well the serenity of the countryside

@e nelsonian: Thanks!
A beautiful landscape! (If you put a river into it, you'll have my home :)

@MadScientist: Well I envy you your home!
very mellow !

@chakrapani: Thanks! It was a beautiful end to a hard day =D)
Great shot, I agree with some of the comments above and a tighter crop on the sky/skyline could be interesting.

@Graham Russon: Thanks =D) Yes, I agree about the crop too!
Very nice indeed. I love the feel of it.

@Gary: Thanks Gary, its good to know the feeling is being communicated - thats what its all about for me.
Lovely image with peaceful mood.
12 Apr 2008 12:56am
@pLusOne: Yeah, it would have been peaceful if it wasn't for the main road behind me lol!
You have enough advice already to last a photographic lifetime here but Chris’ point about the horizon is a valid one, I think . . the old 1/3rd rule is still a good’un.

@Ronnie 2¢: Ha Ha! I never stop learning and I never want to =D)
Dude, I don't think you need to carry your tripod everywhere! This capture is amazing (there's nothing amateur on this shot just a most natural and soft contrast feeling). I've been looking through your portfolio and I'm really impress with your "landscapes" breathtaking lighting, composition and processing. I love your high contrast sunsets, but it doesn't mean you didn't achieve something great with this picture in concrete! Fantastic work, keep practicing and improving, although I think you're almost there !!

@ruben latre: Thanks for the encouragement Ruben =D) It means a lot!
