Thise of you who remember this shot will probably also remember that I wasn't happy with it. Someone requested that I post again once I had got it how I liked it so here it is!
I've brightened the sky much more , darkened the foreground rocks and then applied a lens flare. I don't know if I'd call it finished but I'm much happier with this version - what do you think?
I welcome all constructive comments, compliments and criticisms. I am here to learn. the fastest way for me to learn is for you to be really unforgiving and articulate in your criticism =D)
If you don't have time to comment don't forget to give a star rating as you pass through!

@Cris: Thankyou Cris =D)
nice shot. good processed.

@Saeed: Thanks Saeed, I'm finally happy with this shot - it toook me forever!
It is dramatic and I love the perspective. However the colors of sky and sea are a little too surreal for my taste. But overall I think it is excellent.

@Michael Skorulski: Yeah, the sky was shot using a pretty heavy sunset filter, so it is basically monochrome (although not b&w obviously). The rocks were not and, although I have edited them to match the colour of the sky, they still have the full range of colourtones. I think the eye picks up on this discrepancy and feels a little uneasy looking at it.
I agree with Michael Skorulski.

@Ana Lúcia: Thanks Ana =D) I realise it will not be to everyones taste but I'm glad you liked it and chose to comment.
It's certainly a dramatic and beautifully composed shot; I like it very much. You've done a great job of seamlessly blending the two shots. I think I'd like to see a bit more saturation in the upper part of the sky. A stunning image!

@Ron: Hi Ron, thanks for your input. When I boosted the white levels in the sky, to increase contrast in the shot, I lost some of the colour saturation in the sky. I might try having another fiddle to see what it would look like to add some back in =D)
Umm, I think the rocks look good; am not sure it is improved with the lens flare or the brighter sky. It is still a magical image, but I prefer the previous version.

@Viewfinder: You do? Interesting. It was just too fake for me. In fairness, the added lens flare is also fake but for me it just 'feels' easier to look at. Thanks for commenting, at least you like one of them lol!
this is very artistic

@Dimitrios: Hey, thanks for the compliment Dimitrios
WOW - this is gorgeous - I'm impressed immediately with the sharpness - that's what I notice first about the new image
12 Mar 2008 6:27am
@Betsy Barron : www.thebetsy.com: Yes, the first image had been subtly resized for printing after adding the white border and title so the details would have degraded slightly and I didn't think to apply a little more sharpening to compensate. This image is the original dimensions so the ratio has not been altered, plus it has been made smaller, which will add to the effect.
Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it.
I think there is an extra crispness to this version. The DR is otherworldly. I'd be happy with it.

@Rhys: Thanks Rhys - I am a lot happier. And this is old school HDR, none of that automated photomatix and what-not lol!
Is this Heaven?

@alla: Ha ha! Thanks Alla - with my landcapes I do try to show that bit of 'heavan on earth' =D)
A very impressive image for sure. It has a feeling of heightened reality as though it had been rendered with a 3D modelling program.

@Damon Schreiber: Impressive eh? thats the 1st time anynone's used that word for one of my images lol! Thank you kindly =D)
Beautiful POV

@Jan: Low down and dirty, my favourite POV =D) Thanks!
That's almost unreal! Great post production!
12 Mar 2008 12:51pm
@Alexandros: Thankyou Alexandros - I'm glad you said 'almost' lol!
This looks like the cover of a latest SF novel. Absolutely amazing.
12 Mar 2008 1:25pm
@Ronnie 2¢: Yeah, I can see that =D) Maybe I should start looking for buyers amongst SF novelists lol!
EXCELLENT image - great lighting and point of view

@yiannis krikis: Thankyou kindly Yannis, I favour low angles but t means I have to do a lot of lying down in the mud - I need to get a decent tripod!
STUNNING!! One of the best photos I've ever seen. Great perspective, I also like the colors very much. Wow!
12 Mar 2008 3:26pm
@Himera: Ever? Thanks! So, you wanna buy it? Lol - only kidding =D) Well, lookin at your latest image, you certainly know about colour so thanks for the compliment.
Wonderful surreal image. Well done!
12 Mar 2008 5:33pm
@standley: Thanks =D) I've been trying to make it less surreal but I give up lol! I like it how it is now, I'm glad you do too.
On so many levels I love this... the sci-fi look most especially. Great sharpness and a fabulously interesting image to just question and marvel at. Just out of curiosity have you ever tried doing a duplicate layer (control j), desaturating that layer, then using a soft light blend mode? You may find that is adds an incredible depth or richness to those colours.
12 Mar 2008 9:08pm
@amy: Thankyou Amy, that was a great comment. Hmmm... I've never desaturated before changing the blending. Sounds interesting, let me just give it a quick try.... .... ... ... ... ... Oh. Oh Yes. You Rock! That is perfect, thankyou soo much =D) Great technique!
I am most impressed with the texture and "heaviness" of the rocks. Like other posters, I am not sure about the lens flare. As a sci-fi fan, I am intrigued by the several posts noting that quality in this image, perhaps it is because the sky looks like it is illuminated by a slightly diflferent sun? I don't yet dare do much post-production on my photos, this is inspiring. Maybe I will give it a try sometime soon.

@Pied Crow: Just play around with them, nobody has to see! I'm on the oppisite end of the scale; I have to discipline myself not to go overboard with the processing. I too have picked up on this odd use of the term sci-fi but thought it better not to correct people lol! I think the term 'alien' or 'fantasy' would be better but I guess thoughts of alien worlds leads to thoughts of star trek, hnece the sci-fi label I'm getting. It doesn't bother me though! =D)
Glad you liked the image, thanks for commenting.
This is magnificent I reckon. It has an other worldly feel to it. Great work you've done on it.
Nice to see a piece of my homeland too!
13 Mar 2008 1:39am
@Stu: Wll I'm glad the 'locals' approve lol! Thanks for the compliment.
wow!
13 Mar 2008 3:18am
I saw this and thought to myslelf "this can't be real, its too perfect" Looks like a poster...just stunning!!!!
13 Mar 2008 2:23pm
@MSD: Well, the sun does set at around this point but the shot was taken mid afternoon and a seperate sunset dropped in, so it is not quite 'real' I'm afraid but I'm glad you like it =D)
I've been to Scotland and I don't remember it being like this. Wow.
15 Mar 2008 1:17am
@Doug: Ha ha! It is a wilderness up there. I have some other, less doctored images, which look just as alien!
I'm with those who find it to be very much a striking SF shot.
16 Mar 2008 10:47am
@Twelvebit: Thanks, I was originally striving for realism but have come to love it the way it is =D)
